HOW TO RE CRATE TRAIN YOUR DOG - UNDER CONSTRUCTION
If you dog hates his crate, you CAN fix it. Our dog was tramatized in the crate for two months during a board and train with Puppy Sense, Tucson Az.
Now he loves his crate! You can do it too!
A quick recap of why we need to re-train the crate for Jett.
When we adopted Jett, he didn't need to be crated, he was a well behaved house dog. He was scheduled to go to a board and train to help him with his fear aggression towards people. I figured I should make sure Jett was ok with the crate.
Within a few days, Jett would go into the crate and fall asleep, door was open.
After 2 months of "professional Training" that changed, not for the better.
Soon after Jett's "training" period, We left our dog home to go for lunch. We came back to a shredded foam bed topper. Next trip out, I put him into the crate. Why not? He was in a crate at the trainers, he should love his crate now, right? WRONG!!
We watched on a pet cam in HORROR as Jett clamped onto the crate and pulled with all his might..tugging feircly, and wailing incessantly! He was desparate to get out! He just ignored the kong at his feet filled with his favorite treat!
It has taken 8 months to reprogram the damage done by the "trainer". NOW, Jett will bolt into the crate when asked, he'll take a nap, door open and closed. His crate is now a place of sanctuary.
I will list the steps I did below.. if you need to re-train a dog for a crate, just know it will take at least 2 times as long as his undesirable behaviour has been in the crate. It depends on how extreme the behavior is. Jett's was extreme.
THIS is what I call CRATE TRAINED! And it didn't cost $4000!
